5 repairs you can do yourself before calling a pro
Before booking a handyman, some common repairs can be solved in 15 minutes with two tools. Our list.
Not every everyday issue needs a pro. With a bit of method and the right tools, you can solve a good chunk of them in under fifteen minutes.
1. Tighten a wobbly door handle
A Phillips screwdriver and 30 seconds. Locate the screws under the rosette or directly on the handle and tighten gently.
2. Unclog a sink trap
Unscrew the trap (bucket underneath), empty, rinse. Most clogs are hair and soap buildup.
3. Replace a leaking faucet washer
Shut off the water, disassemble the faucet, swap the O-ring (hardware store, ~$2). Saves liters and dollars.
4. Adjust a rubbing door
Screwdriver and patience: adjust the hinge screws a quarter turn at a time until balanced.
5. Redo a bathroom silicone seal
Remove the old bead with a utility knife, degrease, apply a new bead of silicone, smooth with a wet finger.
When to step back?
As soon as it touches electricity, plumbing under a sink, or hollow-wall anchors: call a jobber. You'll avoid damage costlier than the service.
